Hi. Do you like Pick Up Sticks?

By eatfruit

Hi. Nice to see you again. I’ve been short on inspiration as of late. Parenting a strong-willed child going through the 18 month old stage pretty much takes up all of my time. I’m too spent to even think of being crafty, creative, or witty. Maren and I both have gashes on our heads right now. Violet has taken a shine to beating us with any object she can get above her head (for full head shattering painful impact.) One would think that being a second time Mom would give me some advantages. Er, no. I do know though, that I don’t like out of control kids, and without some serious guidance, Violet has the potential to be a real “handful.” She’s exciting, funny, talking a lot, and strong-willed. It’s just a lot harder for me to figure out what works for her, because NO doesn’t. She laughs and does it more, faster, harder, or with more enthusiasm. There is an old wives tail that says curly hair equals lots of fun. Fun she is alright!

I failed to take photos of the handmade gifts we made this year. I did, though, finish this with Maren for an after Christmas family game. It’s giant Pick-Up-Stix, and it was easy and cheap.

How to make Ginormous Pick-Up-Sticks

Purchase as many dowels as you’d like. I bought 22. We used 3 ft dowels, 1/4″ thick. If you’d like to save money and want shorter sticks, you could buy 11 and use the saw and cut them in half.

You’ll need the following colors of acrylic paint- red, yellow, blue, green, black.

Paint 1 dowel black

Paint 5 dowels red

Paint 5 dowels blue

Paint 6 dowels green

Paint 5 dowels yellow.

We had to do 2 coats of paint. We also did a coat of sealer for durability. Let them dry 24 hours before playing.

Then you can play!

Have your playmate hold the sticks together, stand back, and release. The object is to pick up as many sticks as you can without bumping or moving any other stick(s).

Remember, you can use the sticks you collect as a tool to lift up other sticks. When playing with preschoolers, I recommend having them lay their collected sticks in a pile away from them. Otherwise you might get poked or prodded.  You can also modify the game by playing with less sticks.

Here is the score break down if you like to play competitively. We don’t use points, it sucks too much of the fun out of it with this age group. Read: An angry kid who loses a game and has a stick in their hand. Do you want to go there? I don’t.

Black -25 points
Red -10 points
Blue -5 points
Green -2 points
Yellow 1-point

with Brady, those sticks would be weapons immediately! cute idea…if you have girls! or, a calmer boy than mine.

  2. Trish Says:

awesome and fun! my kids at school love this great game…one of my childhood favorites…even if my brother always cheated:)

hmmm, there’s a certain other lovely lady I know that has curly hair. Does your mom have any stories/advice? Or did she say the ever popular, “I hope you have a kid like you someday?” Just wondering if she comes by it honestly?? Like I said, Christian is the exact same way. I could be wrong, but I think it’s a sign of high intelligence…..not saying he’s a genius, just smart in different ways maybe?

    Good luck to you, friend.

What a neat idea with the giant sticks! Mine would use them as weapons also. Sorry to hear about Vi! Curly hair=fun?! That explains why you are so much fun!

  5. Aimee Says:

I can sympathize with the second child thing…Sarah is so much more a handful than Shelby ever thought of being! Super strong-willed!! They really do challenge everything you THINK you know about parenting and make you wonder where you’re going wrong (at least she does me sometimes).

  6. Sarah Says:

What is it with our girls ? I swear V and M were carved from the same rock. M too, is holding “whatever” way above her head and then WHAM! And “No” just seems to mean “laugh and do it harder and faster”

I think Im going to make this game for Wyatt, it looks like a fun thinker

Remember when I said this age was my least favorite with Madelyn? Is tough to have a girl so stong willed and opinionated? Does she take after anyone you know? Hmmm… Mwwaa! Love ya. It does get better.

Love the pick up sticks idea!!! E is also strong-willed with the curly hair going on. We’ve been giving her lots of little choices and that seems to work well with her as long as she is not tired. She is definitely like Kyle…strong-minded and cute! Challenging and fun. Hugs and a bottle of wine or beer your way!!! Wish I still had the taste for alcohol some days. Today is a good day here…hope yours is too.

  11. Beth Says:

Well I am glad my strong willed kid was first. Or maybe not becasue now I have a strong willed two year old who doest like to be told no. The pick up stick game looks so cute, so creative of you!

  12. Susan Says:

What if you tried this with wrapping paper tubes or newspaper rolls? You could wrap with color paper or fabric instead of painting if you felt that painting these surfaces was too much!
